About the course

Dementia is a growing public health problem. The number of people with dementia in Sweden is estimated to be close to 150 000, a figure that will increase as the number of elderly people grows. The disease is caused by damage to the brain which most commonly impairs cognitive functions such as memory, language, time perception and affects the quality of life through increased anxiety, depression and behavioral changes. There are different types of dementia, with Alzheimer's being the most common. There is no cure yet, but research shows that activity and stimulation have a positive impact on memory and thinking skills and quality of life.

Swedish research studies on MediYoga demonstrate that exercise provides effects of increased health-related quality of life, reduced pain, reduced blood pressure, increased sleep quality and improvement of self-rated stress, reduced anxiety/worry, improved emotion regulation and cost-effectiveness. Large international pooled studies on mind/body interventions confirm and strengthen these results and also demonstrate that the right type of yoga training is among the most effective ways to prevent dementia.

This in-depth course aims to give you as a graduate or certified in MediYoga an increased knowledge of dementia and its subgroups as well as in-depth and specific knowledge of the application of MediYoga as a prevention and rehabilitation method in dementia. The advanced course is also useful for those who encounter individuals with other cognitive impairments.

The MediYoga Institute has developed a 12-week exercise program for people with dementia or cognitive impairment in collaboration with the health sector. This course gives you access to the program so that you can use it in your work.
